![]() ![]() To date, the sizes up to 36' have been built without the aid of cranes and expensive handling equipment. Anyone who has spent time maintaining any vessel of any material will know what I mean! ![]() Brent's message of simplicity is to build only the size you need. Anything bigger than that is bound to be more taxing upon the builder, both during the building process and in use. The 31 footer can be built by one person, and can easily be solo handled the 36 footer is easier for two to build, and is ideal for two to sail the 40 is a bigger affair, and I'll be taking my family along (though it should be easily handled by two). Interestingly, this corresponds nicely to the practical limit for each boat in terms of use and crew. Size limits: There isn't technically really a size limit on building these boats (I've heard of a 50 foot aluminum being built up northern Vancouver Island), but there is a practical limit to how big of a piece the builder would like to work with. He does recommend spot welding the nuts to the bolts on the come-a-long as a safety measure, however (that way the nut can't undo itself over time). Brent Swain, the designer, has found through long experience that even a cheap come-a-long has the power to pull the steel into shape, and this works even when pulling the hull skin around the transom, which is quite a tight curve. Even an 8 foot bar of 3/16th inch steel can be bent by hand around a fixed object quite easily. A 36 foot piece of steel is quite floppy, actually, and does most of its curving without much need for encouragement. Anything left after that can then be focussed on and attended to, though it is unlikely this would be needed to any high degree on an origami boat.Įase of bending steel: The longer the piece, the easier it is to bend, since the curve is quite flat. In this way, the fairing is "automatic" and you won't be chasing shadows - sometimes any attempt to fair can end up making a real hash of it. Why? In most cases a quick sanding in preparation for painting will remove the unfairness you may have detected, because the unfairness is more often only as unfair as the thickness of your paint layers. He cautions that before attacking a hull with epoxy fairing compounds as is commonly done on steel boats, the owner should hold off. Brent has mentioned in his book that even if you do see a small amount of unfairness after the first paint job (the human eye can detect unfairness to a very high degree), just wait until the next time you paint. This hull was not faired with anything other than paint. I'm not sure if it is the best picture to show my point, but if you look along the side of the hull, you can see no ripples or distortions in the reflective surface. The attached photo of Moonraven, a 36 footer do Swain's design in Comox, BC, shows how fair the hull can be. The use of large pieces of steel for each side saves a lot of welding, which in turn saves a lot of distortion from welding heat. Once the hull is welded together, there is no need to do any fairing with putties the way traditional steel boats are. ![]() Bending it into a curve, you'll see no humps and hollows. For an example of this, take any long stiff length of material such as an aluminum ruler, a wooden batten, or even a strip of plexiglass. It is a material of uniform consistency, so will bend into a mathematically perfect curve. This means that the full length (31' to 40') piece of steel for each side (each side is built on its own initially) acts as a very long "batten" (see "building sequence" in the photos section of the group). I don't have access to any information from the registrant, since it is Yahoo which hosts to group's space.įairness: The hulls pull together in a fair curve simply because there are no transverse frames welded to the skin to distort it from a) heat distortion and b) thickening the hull where there frame would be welded on, making the skin material non-uniform. Registration on yahoo group: In the same way people register on this forum, I set it up this way in order to keep a lid on spam and viral attacks from anonymous e-mailers. I'll attempt to answer a few questions as well as I can: Thanks for alerting me to the responses here, Stephen, as I had not looked here for awhile, and had no idea of the activity happening here! ![]() ![]() ![]() There is no obligation for you to apply, borrow, or take loans from the site. The method also enables the measurement of WDT which is the temperature at which the last wax solids are melted back into liquid when the oil is heated,” he notes. “This bespoke VPS method allows the WAT/cloud point of VLSFOs to be measured. The method was validated by correlating with current methodology used for distillates, while its repeatability has been confirmed across the range of 10☌ to 65☌. The output was a White Paper (available from the VPS website) outlining an automatic test method for WAT which is the cloud point of VLSFOs. VPS graph showing range of WAT/Cloud Point of VLSFOs during 2020Ī bespoke VPS method to measure WAT/Cloud Point of VLSFOsįortunately, VPS has already conducted a significant amount of research to develop a reliable method for the measurement of cloud point of VLSFOs during Q2/Q3 2019, shared Dr Cooper. “The VPS recommendation is to measure WAT to be absolutely sure of the cloud point and to proactively maintain the fuel condition for efficient storage and handling of the fuel,” suggests Dr Cooper. This is because measurement of pour point is an unreliable indicator of WAT/cloud point. The development could also mean a shipowner receiving VLSFO with a very low pour point with a high WAT (for example >PP + 20 0C or more) and having his bunkers turn into wax/sludge if following the advisory of CIMAC to store marine fuel at 10☌ above the pour point. Though the occurrence of extremely high WAT measurements has significantly decreased over 2020, attention needs to be given towards an ongoing development where VPS detected an increase in the number of VLSFOs with very low pour points over the past few months. For this reason, the CIMAC recommendation is to keep the fuel at 10☌ above the pour point,” he says. “Current test methods to measure cloud point can only be applied to petroleum products that are transparent in layers of 40mm in thickness. However, the measurement of the WAT and WDT of VLSFOs have always been a challenge as the product, typically a blend of 80% heavy fuel oil (HFO) and 20% marine gas oil (MGO), is not transparent, according to Dr Cooper. Suggest carrying out an exact flashpoint test to make sure that the fuel is not being heated above the flashpoint.Recommendation – Controlled use of additives in some cases can improve the situation just enough to use the remaining fuel. This causes a problem with sludge formation in the storage tank and transfer pipeline, and results in filters clogging with wax, together with serious handling and transfer issues. Characteristics – The product’s separation temperatures may be lower than WAT and for that reason the vessel cannot at any time heat the fuel above WAT.VLSFOs with low viscosity (40☌ and WDT>75☌) Recommendation – Limitation of VLSFO bunker storage time on board to 3 months.Typically, the fuel forms sludge at the purifiers and increasing the temperature further (from storage to separation temperature) has generally worsened the situation. By the time the vessel starts to burn the fuel, the TSP could become off-spec and thick sludge is formed. Characteristics – Heating of these fuels in the storage tank to keep the temperature above WAT to prevent cold flow issues can cause TSP to rise and increase stability issues. He shared some common situations that shipowners are now facing with VLSFOs and offered advice for stakeholders who have already measured the Wax Appearance Temperature (WAT), Wax Disappearance Temperature (WDT) and Total Sediment Potential (TSP) of their product: “Generally, you have to heat VLSFOs to prevent waxing, but the more you heat them the lower the shelf life is going to be,” Dr Malcolm Cooper told Singapore bunkering publication Manifold Times. Shipowners using Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oils (VLSFOs) as bunker fuel to meet IMO 2020 requirements have entered into a “tricky situation” of finding the perfect temperature for fuel storage, says the Group Managing Director of international fuel testing and inspection firm Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS). Moreover, it's the version you can find on nearly every Microsoft computer since 1990, further cementing its place in modern culture. How to Play SolitaireĬlassic Solitaire, also known as klondike solitaire, is arguably the most popular form of solitaire today. Queen Victoria's German husband, Prince Albert, was notably fond of patience games. Some game variations have also been called patience, especially in England, Germany, and Portugal. This is also supported by the use of the alternative term "cabale", which originated from the Medieval Latin "caballa", meaning secret knowledge. The card game Solitaire likely originated from cartomancy or tarot as an early form of fortune telling due to how cards are laid out in both practices. However, this was a different game as it used pegs instead of cards. One of the first documented references to the word "solitaire" was in a 17th-century engraving featuring Anne-Joulie de Rohan-Chabot, Princess Soubise, playing solitaire. The origins of the game are a little hazy. The game involves arranging a shuffled deck of cards into a specified order or tableau, no matter the variation. This made solitaire more accessible, popular and fun to play than ever.Solitaire is the collective term for hundreds of card games and activities requiring only one person. The computer shuffles the cards, lays them out and you can start again at the click of a button. In the 1980’s the first computerized version was created which people could play on their home computers. Hundreds of books were written describing hundreds of different kinds of solitaire (thousands if you include minor variations). Over that time there was a boom of new solitaire games created. The next significant period on the solitaire timeline is the mid to late twentieth century. Prince Albert was known to be a fan and by the late nineteenth century English rulebooks describing solitaire games began to be published. By the mid-nineteenth century solitaire had become a popular past-time in France and it was around this time it began to spread to England too. …(continued) If you are British you may have heard Solitaire being referred to as “Patience” and the French are also known to call it “Reussite” (that is French for “Success”). ![]() ![]() ![]() The four toes point forward and are held closely together with the two front toes often lining up side-by-side.
